Shelby Knox is a young woman from Lubbock, Texas who is religious and has pledged to stay a virgin until marriage. Despite this, she tries to get her school to teach comprehensive sex education at her school after a friend gets pregnant when her boyfriend tells her she can’t get pregnant her first time having sex and that condoms don’t work anyhow. Understanding that kids need to know how to have safe sex instead of just telling them not to have it, she fights her school’s policy on abstinence-only education. You can watch the documentary about it called The Education of Shelby Knox on Netflix Instant. I saw her speak at the National Young Feminist Leadership Conference last year. I really wanted to meet her but we had to leave early. This movie is a great example of Poe’s Law! Man, the interviews with the Christian conservatives are literally churning my stomach. It makes me shiver, it’s so disconcerting.
